Oradour sur Glane, Centre de la Memoire:

In the days leading up to the Allied D-Day landings at Normandy, the Local French Resistance increased its activities in order to disrupt local German forces and to hinder communications.  Along the way, the Germans came under attach and sabotage by the French Resistance and, in turn, attacked and killed many French civilians. Early, on the morning of June 10th 1944 Adolf Diekmann, commanding the 1st battalion of the 4th Waffen-SS Panzer-Grenadier Regiment informed regimental headquarters that he had been approached by two French civilians who claimed that a German officer was being held by he Resistance in Oradour-sur Vayres.  The captured German was alleged to be a Commander of the 2nd SS Panzer Reconnaissance Battalion. SPORTING ACTIVITIES

Swimming

Lionheart Lakes Neither the large, nor the smaller of the Lionheart Lakes is suitable for bathing or swimming; persons entering onto or into the water of either lake do so at their own risk.

There are two large leisure lakes nearby, however; at St Estephe and St Mathieu which provide safe swimming with lifeguard assistance, windsurfing, boating and fishing.  Both lakes have decent restaurants and excellent signposted walks to enjoy and are very child friendly in every respect.Golf
